My 18 year old son got me into fish and we are enjoying them immensely

My son got his eel about 2 weeks ago. He is very nocturnal and seemed health except we have never seen him eat. About two days ago he came out of hiding in the day and started doing laps around the 120 gal tank then curl up in the middle. He hasn't gone back into hiding since. He just keep pacing around and is gasping for air and kind of swimming on his side a lot. Have you seen this behavior before?
