Hey Chinese people, quit killing turtles and go drink some pee if it's beneficial. Everybody's so damn sensitive.

Shipwright in Newport, RI. I build wooden sailboats and take care of my animals.

okay. the THING is this. this is a picture of the shells of deceased turtles. that's it. THIS IS NOT A DEBATE OVER WHAT CULTURES EAT FOR DINNER. There are NO cows or beef in this picture.

Also, WuGwei did not start a war, so before anybody else says ANYTHING, please sit in your computer chair for a very long time and decide whether it adds any intellegence to this topic.

Yes, those turtles died. Yes, it is sad. And yes, most of us here are very attached to our turtle companions, and seeing this picture turns our stomachs.

And YES, some cultures in the world kill VAST quantities of endangered species because they either eat it, or believe that it will bring some sort of luck or medicinal value. (which YES, IS A VERY PRIMITIVE CONCEPT) And they know what they are doing is wrong because they hide the animals. I saw a documentary on it before. This is not only done in China, but several other places in Asia. And it has NOTHING to to with race... like stated before this is strictly a cultural thing. And if you aske me, since they KNOW it is against the law, and that they are killing off rare animals enough to KNOWINGLY HIDE them from officials, it's time to change their primitive ways. It's year 2004, and there's no need to be poaching such SMALL animals for food and tokens of "good luck"

I LOVE astrophotography, and turtles. lol, slighlty different from eachother. i like teakwando also, because it is just awesome

THIS IS IN RESPONSE TO ------SLICK ALE-------
You seem very intelligent, mr. slick. I know exactly what you know. Wherever we humans go, we destroy. Within 90 years, the whole planet will be modernized, and an acre of land will be worth millions.
We humans destroy what we need, in order to be comfortable, which is barbaric. The plastic keyboard im typing on now probably came from some oil rig, in the ocean. That is a NON RENEWABLE RESOURCE dang. WE ARE ALL SCREWED, no one understands that. I think you do though.

I disagree to "what so different as chinese eating turtle, from americans eating pork" there are a lot of difference. Meat is grown, and raised to feed our growing families and communities(we are growing to fricken fast though...) They arent very intelligent. Do some research. A pig is not near as intelligent as a full grown, experienced turtle. At most, they come close to a turtle. turtles are intelligent, and they are helpless. They have a shell, which only helps to doom them, when it comes to us hunting them. All it does is weigh them down, so when they run from our hunters, they run slowly. they cant help themselves. it is cruel to hunt a helpless animal(its cruel to hunt any nice animal, but no one cares)

beef and pigs arent helpless, they can run faster than we can, and can easily chew off our hands, even our arms(maybe) ,plus, the cow can kick. can a turtle do any of those in defence> no. it can only run slowly. Thus, putting a bullet through a cows head(an animal WITH plenty defence) is not as barbaric as putting a bullet through a turtle's head(animal with almost no defence)

Furthermore, this shows turtles shouldnt be hunted! never hunt the helpless. NO OFFENCE CHINESE MAN(and I like chinese, because it was your kind than gave rise to samurai and peaceful traditions) BUT YOU ARE TOO PROTECTIVE OF YOUR KIND. I AM AMERICAN, AND I SAY WE SUCK AT PRESERVATION. WE SUCK, AND I ADMIT IT. SO ADMIT IT TOO, THAT THE CHINESE HAVE HUGE FLAWS IN IDEAS ALSO. DONT KILL TURTLES. THE ONLY REASON TO KILL A TURTLE, IS BECAUSE IT BIT YOUR LEG OFF. NOW THERE'S IS A REASON TO KILL THE DANG THING.........ID MAKE SURE I GET MY POOR LEG BACK. good thoughts mr. slick, good thoughts

Food and killing are huge subjects. Can't comment intelligently, won't try. Was offended to find out recently, through zoological society publication, that nearly 60,000 snapping turtles are "harvested" in US annually. They kill them by cutting off the head. Now, you may not know this, but snapping turtles have very low oxygen requirements. In autumn, they take a deep breath, swim to the bottom, dig for 45 minutes, climb in, sleep til spring, ALL ON SAME BREATH. Guess what, the heads stay alive for up to eight hours after the turtle is killed for food. Why isn't this illegal? Please, let's get the word out, you'd never kill a cow or pig over eight hours. I have two snappies. Best pets you can imagine. Smart, loyal, housebroken, playful. Not kidding. Had them over ten years. If you love turtles, work at loving ALL turtles and get the word out. Forget HongKong, most of the shops displaying the turtle shells serve only the herbal equivalent anyway. Some have had the same turtles "waiting to be eaten" on display for years, have built little environments for them. Transition to pet, anyone? Spread the word.

how does a head stay alive for 8 hours if there is no blood circulation to bring the oxygen to the brain

Just a reply: got my information from WILDLIFE CONSERVATION magazine, which I receive via the New York Zoological Society, August 2004 issue, "The Snapper" article. My quote " ...particularly inhumane because oxygen requirements of a snapping turtle's brain are so low that when its head is severed from its body, it continues to survive with full awareness for as long as eight hours, with its eyes visibly tracking movements. Decapitated heads reportedly snap even as the flesh is stripped from them." That's right, NO blood circulating to the head, and it stays alive. They're remarkable creatures, incredible really, very sad. I have also seen an emergency room report detailing a fisherman's experience in requiring medical assistance to remove a snapper's head from his thumb. He had cut the head off the turtle over an hour earlier and thrown it in his bait bucket, then reached in there without looking. (Serves him right!)

I believe I never said eating turtles was right, and I never said chinese people are some kind of master race, bathing in ultimate perfection.

On another note, I fould out the whole turtle is used, even the shell for jello, like horse hooves. Scary, isn't it?
