What do you plan to do with them when the females need dirt to lay eggs in? Not having land access can lead to egg binding, illness and death. Laying in the water is not natural and is stressful and not all turtles will do it.

Dragon_Lance Registered: 07/2004 Location: Holland Photos Uplaoded: 19 Comments Left: 0 i have 2 red eared sliders and 2 gerbils.	well one of them already did lay some eggs but they all broke in the water couse i diddnt have any sand..i cleaned it as soon as possible.. its very hard to put sand or anything like that in there so that they can lay eggs in the sand, but it wouldnt be of any use of they put the egss in the sand without something coming out of it. i dont have a male, so i dont think its necessary..

Yes, you don't have future baby turtles to worry about but you have the health of the females to worry about. They are stressed having to lay in the water. They need access to dirt. You might inquire how others deal with this problem who keep mature females indoors permanently. If they decide not to lay in the water, egg binding is serious and can be deadly.

deviledapple Registered: 08/2004 Location: Lehigh Acres, FL Photos Uplaoded: 37 Comments Left: 0 I love animals, i incorporate them into my art, and my life.	you know its pretty easy to make a shelf out of plexiglass, you can put it at water leve, and then perhaps use another peice so you can fill the shelf with an inch or two of dirt, sealant and glue that can be used for such a project is easily bought at any hardware store.

Some won't lay eggs in containers, only outside in the ground. Some people just don't realize they have to allow for this when they get these little turtles that get huge and it's a problem.

kasia Registered: 01/2006 Location: wild wild east :] Photos Uplaoded: 11 Comments Left: 0 One 4-year-old RES 'Robal'	You could divide the tank in two parts with a plexiglass, or put a smaller tank inside, and fill it with sand and soil. Your turtles should lay eggs in there. You'll know when they need to nest - their behavior will become 'weard' :) Don't worry, most of the female turtles lay unfertilized eggs when there's no male. It's only important to prepare a place for it.
