Turtle Roast

First of all, SlickAle, I am not talking about a race. I am talking about cultural values. Skin pigmentation has nothing to do with it. Let me say it again. I am not talking about race. I have lived in Asian countries in which live millions of Chinese immigrants, but I have not been to the People's Republic of China and have no desire to visit there. China came to me in the form of massive waves of immgrants, immigrants I taught English to in ESL classes at the college and adult school level. I lived with Chinese students from Taiwan for seven years. I have had more than a couple of Chinese girlfriends. Therefore, please do not insinuate that I am racist. Race is superficial, as is the whole wrongheaded diversity movement in the US. The difference between Americans eating beef and pork and Chinese eating turtles is obvious. One is livestock raised for human consumption. The other consists of endangered species collected in the wild. The US enacts laws to protect endangered species, and the collection of wild turtles to make turtle soup is a punishable offense. The Western mind and the Eastern mind do not view the relationship of man to nature in the same way. Because of the Judeao-Christian tradition, Westerners largely view themselves as stewards of God's creation, whether they are practicing religionists or not. Chinese culture does not. I assume you view Western culture as superior to Chinese since you have immigrated to this country, as have billions (it seems) of other Chinese. Perhaps you share the Western viewpoint, but many Chinese do not, so from time to time you read in newspapers of "raids" in Chinatown that confiscate animal parts of endangered species. And race has nothing to do with this.

China will finally me modernized as soon as their populace has killed off every turtle species in Asia. Just because something is a stereotype doesn't mean its not accurate. Also, because something that is ignorant and destructive is a part of an ancient culture that doesn't mean it should be allowed to continue. They need to be educated and punished if it continues. I agree that there are animal cruelty problems in the US but its not on the scale of the turtle issue in China. All of the cultures that promote ignorant and destructive behavior need to be controlled.

DoorGunner, I got worked up because your first post seemed like you were bashing the Chinese as a race. I agree with you that turtles shouldn't be harvested, I wasn't against you in that way. I actually didn't immigrate here, haha I was actually born in LA. A lot of people around me have been racist, so I assumed you were too. I'm sorry about my quick assuptions.

I am Chinese and what the Chinese do to animals is really retarded--all in the name of silly superstitions. However, I also agree that Americans (and humans, in general) treat other animals just as horribly, too--the meat industry and animal testing industry, for example. No animal should be treated cruelly, regardless of whether it is "cute" (such as turtles are to us turtle-lovers) or not so cute (such as, for most people, chicken).

Well i found that pic unnecessary, what does that have to do with a pet forum? Secondly i agree that there is no scientific evidence to the so called cures. However that is what some peopel believe and it is their right. The thing that is wrong is that beef and such are raised as food. There is no danger of cows being exticnt as such in the turtle population. If the worlds turtle population wasnt in danger and they were raised as food, i wouldnt have a problem.

Actually I have a probelem with cows. Rainforests and marsh lands are being cleared just for cow pastures. When cows stamp the ground, it becomes compact and doesn't allow more plants to grow and might even divert water ways. Now if turtles were bred for consumption, I wonder what that would be like... Is there really that much flesh on a turtle?

This is a Pet Forum!I think you post the wrong picture,and guys!There are turtle farm in Mainland China and they breed turtle for food like you do for roasted beef?

First off, JJ probably never checks this photo. Infact he was busy for quite a while in settling back into Canada. So he did not just "start a war" then walk away.

Isn't turtle soup a well known delicacy in the sothern USA?

I have lived in Oh. for about 20 years and just recently moved to La.about 8 months ago. I have had famialy down here all my life and have yet to see turtle soup on the menue here. Up north on the other hand, I have herd a lot more people talk about eating turtle soup and such. Down here in the south we like to eat Crawfish or crayfish much more. I do believe that the person how posted this pict. did so to start a fight and just left. I dont care about his or her situation. If they couldnt keep track of the replys on there pict. they shouldnt have posted such a horrible pict.

I see that this photo has struck a nerve with a lot of people, that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Simply hearing about the things being done around the world that harm animals is one thing, seeing is another. It is easier to put it out of our minds if all we have to go by is words, images on the other hand let us visualize.

Seeing this shocking image on a pet loving website may help to get the point across that this an issue in the world. I think that it promotes awareness more than anything. I certainly seen a lot of passionate replies to this picture. No matter what the view point, I think that it is good that it challenged everyone to address this issue and really ask themselves what they think about it.

Hey Chinese people, quit killing turtles and go drink some pee if it's beneficial. Everybody's so damn sensitive.
