In response to jawilson's post about big orb weavers. Anyone got an ID on these things? they are EVERYwhere. I went home from uni the other day, counted five HUGE webs in our yard alone, most of them at least five feet off the ground
This looks to me like a cross spider. We have them everywhere here too. Seems the time of year for them. Look on its abdomen and see if you see a white or light colored cross marking like this: -|-
(it's really made up of more like spots of color).

These guys are alot of fun. Catch a moth and throw it in the web....then watch. Also, these guys are very gentle to handle. They don't bite humans....or at least they have never bitten me and I have handled many of them.

I found one almost indentical in Southern California, i had never seen one here before this year. If it isn't a cross spider, what is it?

I think it's called a garden orb weaver. These guys relaly don't look like the cross spiders ive seen pics of. abdomen is different color and they have bristles whereas the cross's dont appear to

ya those things are common here in MD too when i was young i use to catch em they aint very smart LOL
