Keywords: CO2 setup killbox

HEre it is ready to go. The tank is connected to the hose; the hose connects to the shoe box; the lid is on the shoe box (note the small vent hole in the lid)

I thought it was a bong.

I tried the "whack 'em against something hard" technique when I got my first snake. It wasn't for me. Now, since I am breeding my own mice, I have to dispatch many mice at one time. This device has allowed me to "do in" up to 20 mice in approx 30 seconds. For me, this is quicker and easier.

Awesome. Where do you get your CO2? Did you seal up around the tube going into the container?

Drowning? That is extremely cruel.
Have you ever been caught underwater? It takes like 3-5 minutes for them to actually drown (die). And every minute seems like an eternity. It's absolutely horrible.

it is a good idea but that is a Paintball Co2 tank, they put liquid Co2 in it or a combination of the gas and the liquid , soooo its gonna get REALLY COLD -100* or colder in there if you can find one I would use an all air soda charger not one of the fifty gram ones tho

tommot:
Yes this is a 20oz paintball co2 tank, which is pressurized at 800PIS. Depending on ambient temperature the co2 in the tank could be half liquid half gas form, and when released GRADUALLY at room temp, it will always be in gas form. The endothermic reation is simply the byproduct of high pressured co2 released into a much less pressuized state. Therefore by getting a soda co2 tank wouldn't help you much, still going to be cold and the mice will still die. I personally perfer "squeeze them till they die" techq. :)

how much did it cost to get the setup started

okay...2 answers in one post. It works in two ways. CO2 is heavier than air, so as CO2 enters the chamber the "regular air is displace upward, and eventually out of the container. Note the small hole in the lid. CO2 acts as a sedative in low quantities, slowly putting the mice to sleep. As the concentration builds it becomes lethal. So if you take your time and release the gas slowly, the mice (or whatever) fall asleep and then die, with no apparent trauma. If you release the gas too quickly they simply suffocate and there is some apparent panic. 2. the cost of this setup ,for me, was about $3. I already had the paintball CO2 canister and the hose. If you were to start from Scratch, I'd guess $20-$30 for the CO2 tank (the bigger the more expensive. this on is 20oz.) You can get them at most Wal-marts these days in the sporting goods section. The "tub" costs around $3 ( also at Walmart) The hose might be a little more of a problem, but if you don't have a paintball store in your area, you could certainly find it on the internet. Hope that helps.

I have been wanting to do this but I don't know where to get that hose thing.
can I do the same thing but use a bigger tub for rabbits and large rats? one more thing is it harmfull to feed the freshly killed animal to my snakes since it was just gassed by CO2? Thanks.

gunner, if they are wet, like if you released too much too fast, you will want to wait for a few min. I also wash mine off, one to get any gas that may be under the fur off, and to get the body temp back up...An added bonus for you smokers, if you do it right a miss placed ash could give you instant hairless mice!!! Rock on, Blue

I'm a little confused by most of what blue wrote. If the gas is released slowly there is no significant loss in body temp. Also, Co2 is not flamable, so I don't know what he meant by the ash/hairless thing. Finally as far as washing the mice to remove any remaining gas is totally unnecesary. CO2 is a product of respiration. It's what you exhale when you inhale oxygen.

one other thing...I also don't understand the "wet" comment. Unless it is very humid where you are, there shouldn't be any wetness either. We're not flooding the container with liquid CO2, we're releasing it as a gas. Yes the gas cools rapidly due to expansion, so I guess if it was very humid you could get a sort of "dew" effect. Notice in the picture that the CO2 cannister is fully upright. This is to prevent liquid from pouring out. If liquid DID go into the container, the mouse would be "flash frozen". Of course, the container would also certainly be damaged, and you run the risk of a pretty nasty "freeze burn" if you stick your hand in it. All in all, the CO2 "gas Chamber" method of dispatching rats and mice is Safe, simple, effective and not messy at all. I do suggest putting a paper towel in the bottom of the container before you add the rodents to absorb the urine that is frequently released as they expire.
