Keywords: New CFBN Paludarium

I recently built this small paludarium for a Chinese FBN. There's a small waterfall in the left back corner. Comments or advice are welcome!

That's awesome! I really like your tank setup, esp. the back wall. You are going to have one happy Newt! Nice job 5/5

Thanks for the comments! It's only a ten-gallon....not a lot of water in it. I'm not sure how long I'll feel comfortable keeping even one CFBN in it....frequent water changes are definitely in order!

hey, i wouldn't worry too much about the water. You already have the pump going. Looking at the rock set up, you can add a charcoal filter over your pump to make a mini pump, or just get a Duetio mini filter. You should be good to go.. The only thing I would worry about is what type of rock you used..Does it contain any thing that could leech into the water?? Rock on, Blue

I'm sure you've answered this before, but how did you make the rock background? Thanks

Actually I didn't answer it! Assuming you're talking about the gravelly background and not the waterfall, I used a piece of lucite from Home Depot, used a heat gun to bend it to the shape I wanted, then sealed it in place with aquarium sealant. Then I used more sealant to coat the water side of the lucite, and poured washed/dried gravel onto it. It took a couple of treatments to do this, since there was always some spot that didn't stick, and the silicone took forever to stop emitting fumes! In fact, the first planting on the land side was too soon, and I put a lid on, too; the plants all died! Fortunately I hadn't put in the air plants yet. I also siliconed in the cork bark, on the back wall. If you try this, I recommend giving the tank at least a week to air out before planting or putting in any critters; outside is better, because the vinegar smell of the fumes is strong!

Thanks. Did you buy the background? not the gravelly one, the one thats reaches to the top of the aquarium, like a rock backgorund i guess.

the background above the soil is cork bark; I bought it at a LFS (that specializes in reptiles). I cut it to fit the back of the tank, and siliconed it in place. I bought some tillandsias (air plants) online pretty cheap, and warm glued them to the bark. The creeping fig is held to the bark with staples. I spray the tillandsias a few times a week with distilled water, and just water the rest of the soil occasionally.

I assume you're asking for the website of the company I bought the air plants from; that is "www.alcjr.com/tillandsias/tillandsias.htm". They were great to work with, have lots of care info online, and I got the plants in two days.

Good luck!

I made the background; I made it from cork bark, siliconed to the back side of the tank. I attached the air plants to it with glue. I didn't buy it made; I bought the bark at a local store.

thank you sooo much. I want to make something kind of liek this but i needed a background, and I like yur gravel idea too. I've been looking for cork bark, but it's pretty expensive. How much did yur cork bark cost you? And whats the name of the store? thanks! :)

The cork bark I bought was about $5 a pound; yeah, that's a little pricey, but it lasts a long time! I live in Knoxville, TN; the store I bought it from is called Fins & Skins. It's a locally owned store.
