Found this in a crumpled bathtowel last winter...pic could be better but I was very leery of getting my hands close to this guy, as he was a fast mover and I had no clue what he was....brown recluses (aka violin spiders) live in my area...could this be one?

It could very well be, due to the marking, but the abdomen doesn't look quite right...If I could see its eye pattern I could tell you, but my best guess is that it is not a recluse.

I don't think this is a recluse. The abdomen on a recluse is generally much darker, and the violin marking is much wider. Also, recluses legs are usually more widespread when they walk. I have become very familiar with recluses. My house was full of them when we moved in.

Any idea what this IS then? I can't match it up to anything in my audobon bug book

EEP from the looks of it, it IS. or possibly one of many different variations of the Brown recluse. (It could be a Desert Recluse AKA the "Phantom Recluse") unless its just a house spider. Did he/she have long pedipalps held out forward and together? if so, then your safe.

I couldn't get her to move around so i could get a pic of the front, no idea about the pedipalps. I live in western NC (mountain/forest region) would a desert recluse be found in such an area? She was indoors, but most likely came in only because of the cold

The house spiders around here usually stay in cobwebs. The only roaming type we usually see indoors are wolf spiders and such things. Never ever seen one like this inside or out far as i know

IT couls be. However, it looks more like a yellow sac spider.
