This is what I believe to be a paddletail newt...I adopted him from someone who claimed their Chinese Firebelly Newt had been eating all their aquarium fish. I thought it was odd, but I agreed to take it....and was quite surprised to find this guy!

He's been alot of fun to watch, and has nearly died twice from drying out on the carpet after an aquarium escape. Thankfully, he recovered and has never shown any signs of slowing down.

Where do you get them? I want one so bad. They are so cool. I live in NC and I have no connections with breeders/herps what so ever. Please help.

His owner dropped him off....they bought him as a regular fire belly newt, he ate their fish, and they got sick of it.

I've seen them in various stores, sometimes as paddletails sometimes as just FB's.

A store here in Vegas ( Exotic Pets ) has them...and they post on the kingsnake classifieds.

I had a paddle tail a few years ago in my fish tank and he had the best personality of any amphibian I have ever had, if you could call it that lol. But they do seem to have a knack for escaping and after acouple times out my little guy finally met his demise from dehydration under the sofa :'( But I'm in the process of growing in a lush aquarium for one I saw at the local pet store and am itching to get.

I have a paddle tailed newt just like yours! His name is Russell.I never intended on getting a paddle tailed newt at all!The pet shop were meant to be getting me a red spottd newt but insted they got me Rus.I did not even know what type he was for a while until a women in a different pet shop told me.I have had him for a year. His tank is 18" by 10" by 10", and is a bit drab.It litrally has a filter some bogwood, water and of course, pebbles.I'm going to be getting him some strips of ealodea (an aqauatic plant) some small water plants, a small cave, air stones (aparently they are a good idea)and I bought him a potted ivy plant to trail over the water and give him a sense of protection.Do you have any other ideas? Also feeding him is a bother.I can't bear giving him live food.I'd get upset seeing him kill things and I like all animals.I feed him terrapin food which consists of dried shrimp and tubifex worms. Also I feed him dried fish sachets (brine shrimp, daphnia and bloodworms).None of our pet shops have freezers for frozen food. Any ideas for non live food?

I fed mine earthworms, wax worms, crickets ( with tongs ) and cut up grocery store ( human grade ) shrimp, cod, salmon, etc... He ate very well for me.

As for decor -- It's up to you! I like to build up a back wall for a look of depth, but just make sure it's safe for him.
