Here is a pic of my male Tamatave and what I was hoping people could tell me is if they have ever seen lip problems like this or if you might know what it is caused from!? I've drawn arrows to the two most noticeable areas which if you can't tell from the photo it is actually his lower lip protruding out past his upper lip. Please let me know! Thanks ahead - Thomas

It looks like mouth rot. Thats how it starts off, and its usually caused by a cricket leg poking the lip.

Take a clean, Wet Q-Tip and clean out the problem areas. If you are lucky you will catch it before it becomes a problem. watch it close.

I've had problems like that once, I think it was due to a calcium deficiency in mine ... the first chameleon I ever attempted and the first time I tried to really raise a reptile. That was what I was told, but maybe it was mouth rot because there was stuff just inside the lower lips. Good luck!

It appears to be mouth rot, it can also be caused from chewing on things in the cage like, small branches, plastic vines, and what ever else the decide to chew on. thats why you see it on both sides of his mouth. It is a natural behavior to chew on things like this for many thought reasons. A couple applications of topical ointment,(like neosporin, but from your vet.) Good luck, and Nice chameleon!

Have you had any success curing this? If so, could you please share the information you received with us? We are desperate to learn more about the cause, and cures so we can help our Louie.

I have yet to find out what causes this freak appearance. I've had it happen quite often with Dude and it just seems to go away on its own though next time I see it I have a vet here in Michigan that will take walk-ins so I will be sure to give him a visit and see what he thinks. In fact I will try to get his email address to send this pic to him and let you know what he has to say. If you hear anything please keep me informed as well.

Thanks - Thomas
