Keywords: corn snake skin

Does anyone know what is going on with my snake's skin? It is all dry and wrinkled on the lower portion of his body. It also has a couple of whitish discoloration spots - you can see one of them on the 2nd saddle from the bottom.

I have been dealing with the same or similar problem with my female kingsnake. Her scales on the last half of her body appeared wrinkled/shriveled but there was nothing else abnormal. I'm not sure what the cause is, but I do know that after soaking her for a continuous hour once every day for three days she looks almost 100% back to normal. I guess there is some way that the skin gets dehydrated, even though the animal has access to water. Perhaps the animal actually isn't drinking and there is some underlying medical problem. I'm going to keep an eye on mine and see if it keeps happening. Then it will be off to the vet. Make sure you listen for signs of respiratory illness (clicking/wheezing). If so take it to the vet. Good Luck. Let me know if soaking works for you too.

Hi, I have read about discolouration in snakes and folds in their skin. The problem is usually one of dehydration or underfeeding. The folds usually represent an underfed snake try feeding you snake larger mice and maybe soak it in a bath every once in a while. I hope this is helpful.

Thanks for your replies. I wanted to say that I have taken him to the vet and the answer was that the spots are hypomelanism. So that part is genetic - nothing that you can do about it. They are emerging since his just approaching one year in age. The wrinkled nature was just due to low humidity levels because of the winter. He just shed again and his skin looks much better. I've been misting him periodically.
