Mantids are insectivorous and will eat an occasional small vertebrate. Food sources are beetles, butterflies, spiders, crickets, grasshoppers; and vertebrates include small tree frogs, mice, lizards, etc. A general feeding rule, is to never feed them anything that's half or a 1/4 their size. So at their 1st instar you should feed them fruit flies. Then as they grow bigger you can begin to feed them young crickets, and so on.
