Strange insect

Keywords: strange odd mantis

This is one of the strangest insects I've ever seen. It was found crawling slowly on the side of our house last autumn, and about 2 hours later was found dead in a spider web (being feasted on). I took several pictures before its untimely demise.

I've never seen an insect with a "hooked beak", nor any of the other odd features this one possessed.

If you have any odea what this thing was, please let me know in case I run across one again. In case it matters, I live in a rural area just outside Huntsville, AL, USA.

thats a wheel bug, they use that beak to suck the juices out of their prey,they call it a wheel bug on a count of that bulge on its back

As stated above, this is indeed a Wheel Bug, a member of the Assassin Bug family. An important note about this insect: it's strong, sharp beak can also be used against humans, delivering a painful stab if the insect is mis-handled. It's best to just watch these guys and don't touch them.

What a good picture! I've only seen two wheel bugs in my life; one in Frisco, TX and the other in College Station, TX.

I live in rural York County, Pennsylvania & we do have a lot of these Assasin Bugs. Their sting is much more painful than a bee sting. They lay eggs in the fall. They remind you of the shape of honeycomb only they're black & held to the side of whatever they're laid on with a tar like substance.

I had one on my back porch this morning. It is a nasty-looking insect. I just hope that he didn't have friends and that he doesn't like my house!
