Keywords: snake boa girl babe ibd feeding rat serpent goddess

Inca passed away January 17, 2004 from IBD. She is the second one now. She was very special. When I got her, she had been severely abused and neglected, yet she was so sweet and gentle, and would only eat if I handed the rat to her directly by hand. Many nights she would sleep in bed with me, all curled up around me. Its a shame this beautiful baby had such a cruel fate. I miss her deeply.

Yeah it is sad. How far apart were the deaths. IBD can easily be spread from snake to snake(I'm sure you already know that) so it is possible that a trace of it may be in your house from the first snake and infected this one. If you have other snakes you should take good measures to keep them from getting it.

I too am sorry to hear of your loss.
I cannot stress th eimportance of quarantining inbound animals enough.
Inclusion Body Disease (IBD) is indeed very contagious and found primarily in boas and pythons.
IBD was first described about twenty-five years ago and the name was derived due to characteristic cytoplasmic inclusions which are found in the cells of various epithelial tissues.
The pathogen is significant in that it is found primarily in boids and pythons. Clinical and pathological analysis indicate the etiologic agent as being a retrovirus.
Common symptoms are lethargy, gazing off into space, mild seizures, respiratory problems and a host of neurological deficiencies.
Once again, I am sorry to hear of your loss, but please quarantine new specimens in the future.

All of my snakes have had a minimum of 6 month quarantines as most of them were rescues. I always wash up after handling each one and use anti-bacterial gel. I even have different hospial type gowns which I wear for each one and bleach is a staple in my house. It still doesn't seem to be enough. My first one to pass, Giant, died in March of last year. He was the suspected carrier. His only symtom was a bloated belly. Inca was kept in a completely different room. Her sypmtoms were more typical, and her last few months were hard. I also have a Ball Python, which I've had for4 years, that is suspected of having it. Since there is no medical cure, I've recently sought alternative therapies such as homeopathic elixers and Reiki. I will keep you all up to date with the outcome.
