This is a Short-Winged Blister Beetle, also known as an 'Oil Beetle'. When threatened it plays dead by falling on it's side and becoming immobile. Also, the leg joints release a liquid that causes blisters when it contacts the skin, so I hope for your sake you didn't try to handle this critter. The larva of this species hitch rides on Bees after hatching and raid the hives.
