This is my ten year old Leopard Gecko that I have had since she was an egg. Her name is Yin Yang because when she was a baby she had a yin yang pattern on her. She is still strong and healthy!!

thats a great lookin leo. its awsome to kno that as long as we take good care of our herps, most of them could live almost half of our lifes.

oops i forgot to add is it alright to have sand as a substrate in my leo cage? like the really fine grain caliculm sand?

Its better then the substrate I have which I am going to change. The sand has less chance of clogging their intestines and causing intestinal distress. I have substrate that is a little larger grained than that.

actually no,, sand is safe NOT for leos...it can cause impaction, i'd go with carpet, slate.or papertowels if you ant your leo to live a long happy life

I used playsand as a substrate for my adult leopard geckos for years. I never lost a single one from impaction. No offense Tokay, but that's my personal experience.

fine grade calcium sand should be ok for a sub adult or adult, but in my past experiences, it does cause impaction in juvies. Playground sand is made of a sharp silica that will interlock in the belly and cause impaction in most cases, but i have heard of cases where the animal was kept on it their entire life with no problems. I guess that it really depends on the individual animal. Keep an eye on them and make sure that they dont eat alot of the substrate. Keep them properly calcified and you should have no problems. Feed mealworms in a bowl too. My opinion is that i would keep babies on paper towel (thats what my baby leo is on now) and adults on a type of quartz(rounded grain) or calcium sand. The end.

sand is in constant argue in the leo forum. riot is right, as long as its an adult and u dont have 4 inches of it ull be fine.
