Keywords: caterpillar identify larvae

??? Need help with ID... Found this goldish larvae (with gold rear horn) on ground level, and a darker-coloured one on a stone near the creek. Size is about 3 inches long. Not seen on plants. Moth? Beetle? Any ideas? It is very attractive...but what will it turn into?

Our kids found an identical "Caterpillar" in our front yard earlier today. We have no idea what it is. If you find out anything, please e-mail us at monson7@adelphia.net. THANKS!

I searched around and found Daniel Marlos at whatsthatbug dot com on the web and asked him. He wrote "Your caterpillar is a White Lined Sphinx or Striped Morning Sphinx, Hyles lineata, a beautiful moth with a three inch wingspan. They have an almost infinite list of food plants, but are
very fond of fuschia." I have seen White Lined Sphinx moths in my area (San Dimas Canyon, Los Angeles County) before, so I assume that is what it is. Amazingly beautiful, isn't it? A very charming find!

ooooo, I want! I want!
I'm crazy about Caterpillars, and all I've found in my area is Tent Caterpillars, Cornworms, Silver Spotted Skipper larvae and fall Webworms. I have raised a Tiger Swallowtail larvae (that thing was soooo cool! It didn't even stink!) and a black swallowtail larvae. I wish I could find another Blck. Swallowtail.... i loved that thing...
But yours, As i've seen in my books... is like that guy said, a sphinxe moth larvae. It could be any kind, since they are somewhat look alikes. -DDD

we've looked and looked for swallowtail caterpillars, as they are so fierce looking and interesting. We have Western Tiger and Pale Tiger Swallowtail butterflies here in abundance, but have never been able to find the caterpillars. Where did you find yours? They may be laid on tall trees in our area, but I keep on hoping to someday find one!

Believe it or not, I actually found a baby Tiger Swallowtail larvae today!
It was on an ash tree, I think. But it was near the ground. It was in a curled-up leaf, and the sides were glued together. The middle part wasn't, so it could pop out. I think the little guy is 3 days old, cause it looks like bird poop, not even got a spec of green on him yet. Mine's an Eastren Tiger. I had one last year, but my dad found it and it immidiately pupated. It came out ok, by the way.
I'm going to keep my new one and carefully raise it. Hopefully you'll find one soon, too!
