Looks like it might fly. Found 4/11/04 just after rain. 75 degree temp.

I might be wrong, I don't have my book here with me but I think that it is a blister beetle.

bombardier beetle. They spray a caustic fluid from their abdomen when molested. Makes a popping sound.

Blister beetle,bombardier beetle doesn't have abdomen out from under the wing cases and is shorter front to back.
