Keywords: black widow looking spider

somebody tell me what this is, i captured it in my backyard next to a bunch of old logs so i assumed it was a black widow but it doesn't have a shiny body or slender long legs. it does have two hard to see red marks on each side of its butt, i read that widows can have that but i'm not sure that this is one because its also kinda hairy.

It appears to be a type of Jumping Spider, not sure on the exact species though. Either way it's harmless to humans. These Spiders are actually quite fun to watch as they search for prey then sneak close enough to pounce on it from several inches away with pinpoint precision.

wow its a jumping spider, i've never heard of those over here(s.f. bay area) but yeah i put a bug in there with it but it hasn't eaten it yet, it just puts its arm out and kinda punches the bug but not eat it. so if it really is a jumping spider will it jump on the prey and how can i find out what specificly it is?

Best bet for a positive ID would be to contact a local zoo or university and see if an entomologist there can identify it. Most entomologists are usually quite familiar with the various types of invertibrates in thier area, including Spiders.
