Mice and/or crickets! It took a while to get him interested in mice, but now he takes them with no problem.

hey,
this is an odd question.
but would it be alright if i asked you a couple questions about your toad... i just got one myself, and everything i have read about them doesnt really help me.....
and i figured you as an owner of one yourself, you would know a lot more than any book could tell me.....?

?1. could you possibly tell me how big he was when you got him and how long it took for him to get that big..?
?2. what do you have to keep him heated?
?3. i left a mouse in mines tank alllll day and finally he ate it when i wasnt there..... is yours a picky eater also?
?4 how did you makes yours look so fat and happy??
thanks for you time and such =)

She is not too picky, nor shy when it comes to eating. I can tell you she prefers larger items (mice, cicadas, grasshoppers) over little crickets. She hunts and eats her food eagerly, whether I'm in the room or not. I suppose if yours is new, (s)he may just need more time to adjust to the new home. I make sure mine gets two good-sized meal items a week.

Mine is kept with a temperature gradient of 68° - 82° F, and a basking spot up to 95°, although I never see her in the basking spot. I use an overhead heat bulb to supply the heat to the basking spot, but also an undertank heater to help create the temperature gradient.

She is usually found sitting in her cave, where she's dug out a "nest" in the cypress mulch that covers the floor. Sometimes she takes a dip in a pool which is big enough for her to fit in comfortably, and is about 2½" deep with clean water. I change the water twice a week or whenever she poops in it!

Mine is, from snout-to-vent, about 8" long and from side to side about 6" wide at the widest point. She must weigh a good 3½ lbs.

I can't say how quickly she grows because I've only had her for about 2 months now. I haven't seen any noticeable growth. She took about a week and a half to settle in and start acting comfortable with her new home, though, so if yours is really, really new, take heart. They are not all that bashful and shy. Eventually it will learn that you won't hurt it and there's no need for it to be scared when you're around.
