putting a heat lamp on the side heats the tank better...but its not a very good idea..

Nope.. It's almost as bad as sitting your reptile's tank i direct sunlight.

well its not as bad as that, the sun is 10,000 times more powerful, that lamp would easily overheat that tank to about 92-97*f if its over 60watts..

I hope he has some kind of therm to check the temps in that tank...w/ a lamp like that AND a heat pad it might be very hot in there.

Yes, that wouldn't be too good.

I use a 40 watt white light on the screen on one side in the daytime. Along with a small heat pad that is also on at night. I put the red bulb in a seperate unshaded lamp fixture so I can view all my lizards at night. This seems to work well.

It's not walnut, it's repti-sand. Also I moved the lamp (40 watt) to the top. The geckos were on this same substrate for quite a while. I just got them and haven't changed it so far. They seem to be doing ok, they dont eat it or anything. I may use the tile idea that someone posted in the forums.

I hope you switch them! I know you have more then likely heard this before, but why take a risk of impaction? I have seen countless posts that read.. "I should have listened...". Just suggesting this to you. Tile would be an awesome idea, holds heat well AND looks natural! Good luck! :)
