Any opinions on these white areas on his leg? Note he's lost a toe also. Is it just a scarred area, fungus? This TX tortoise is a misplaced one found in Houston. (And don't worry my permit allows me to rehab this threatened species. So I legally have him.) At this time he's asymtomatic for any resp. infections and eats good. I've rehabbed lots of aquatic turtles and box turtles but not many tortoises. I'm looking for a monitored preserve or a zoo in a dryer climate for him to go to. Oh yes, he's not growing a beard, he had been munching on a weed that had gone to seed!

i wouldn't know... maybe you could try asking on the tortoise forum, as there are a lot of knowledgable tort keepers who post there. he's certainly cute in his grumpy-looking sort of way! :)

Yes, I do plan on getting him to the vet that see's my wildlife but I can't always get in when I want. I've had a couple other turtles to him in the last week that had the greater need (resp. inf. and egg binding due to injury). He treats them for free so I don't like to bombard him too often. Yesterday he did an extensive surgery to remove eggs in this injured egg bound RES. The Oxytocin shots didn't work. He's a great vet.
