Looks to me like Protobothrops jerdoni xanthomelas.

where exactly in bangkok did ur friend bought it? is ur friend from sg petani, kedah? i've seen couple of specimens resembling the pix. they are owned by a friend of mine. they are not for sale though..

sigh! this is definitely a "protobothrops jerdoni xanthomelas" or simply known as "chinese mountain pit viper". it is fairly rare elsewhere in the world except China (prolific natives). just make sure that ur friend doesn't fool around with the specimen as there are no known anti venom within this region.
