Please can somebody identify this insect! When it is disturbed it will rear up its tail like an earwig or scorpion so it must be able to sting.

That is a rove beetle named Staphylinus. They like feeding on maggots they find hangin' out on carrion. They don't sting although it is threatening when they raise their abdomen up and yellow stripes come out like a wasp.
