I'm not sure what these are. They were found under the insulation below my den floor (exposed to the elements underneath). I used a hoe to pull down the insulation and within 2 seconds one of them stung my wrist. I've tried to spray but can't get a good enough angle (with a safe retreat).
This is a yellowjacket's nest, it appears to be the Eastern yellowjacket, Vespula maculifrons. Disturbing one is never a good idea as you found out! If they cannot be sprayed safely, professional pest control is required. The nests are usually abandoned for the winter and not reoccupied.
