is that one of those blue kritter keeper like things, those are WAY too small for that tokay.

Yes it is and we are aware that it is too small. We just got him two days ago, he was meant to be a gift for someone that already had a cage. But when we bought him we didn't realize that tokays were aggressive, so we decided to keep him. We are going back today to buy him all of the stuff we need for his cage and to buy a lepoard gecko for the gift. Got any advice on how to set up our tokay's cage??

naturalistic setups are always nice, granted youre willing to maintain them. in my opinion, its also good for your gecko's health and well-being. if you do decide to go that route, be sure to avoid any substrate with fertilizers and make sure you do not put anything in that could be toxic to your gecko. not owning any tokays myself, i honestly dont know what suits them best. but of course, the bigger the tank the better.

a 20 gallon is a good size and reptiles aren't the best thing to give as a gift.

20 gallon is NOT good size, 30-40 gal verticals are good, 40s are best, i've kept tokays for 9 years, add lots of plants and branches for te tokay to hide, make sure it's temps ate 75-85 daytime and 70-75 nighttime, humidity should be in the 60's, feed it crickets, superworms and pinkies if you want, and always remember to dust it's food with calcium powder

I thought this was a message board to post questions and ask advice. I don't appreciate rudeness, especially from a teenager. Let me further explain why we were buying a gecko as a gift. My brother has had one for years that we bought him for his birthday, it died last week. We were buying him another one. My husband went to the store to get it and he didn't know what kind of gecko it was so he asked for a gecko and that's what they had there and sold him. I told him when he got home that it didn't look like Jon's other gecko, so we researched them. We know little about gecko's and that is why I ask for help on how to set his new home up. I didn't want to return sticky back to the store so we figured we would keep him and learn about geckos. We did go buy him a large verticle cage last night and lots of things to go in it for him. But you need to remember that there is usually a reason behind why people do things, like buying a reptile for a gift. You don't always know the whole story.

Thank you for your help. We did buy a verticle 33 gallon cage last night. And added lots of branches, leafy things, and a hideway in there for him. We had read to spray inside for humidity and that the tokay would lick the water off the walls, is that right??? I thought I would need a water bowl for him to drink out of or swim in, do i need this or not? Our humidity and temp is good, I am glad to hear we were right about that. And do tokays did a heat light of some sort? We did put a heat pad underneath the cage on one side. Sticky seems like his new cage, I was terrified of getting bit moving him though.

Thanks for your info. I looked at your home page. I am originally from a place about 30 miles from Charlotte, NC. My husband is in the military so that is why I have moved. I love NC. How are you enjoying the zoology program at school? I can imagine that is very interesting. I love animals, but at the same time are very timid of a lot of them.

since tokays are arboreal they'll rarely go to the floor of the cage, only to eat.a heat lamp on one sode is fine 75 watts will do, spray the tank twice a day, tokays rarely ever drink from water bowls your very welcome for the advice, if theres anything else you need email me at hazerdhacker@aol.com

thanx cheeto and no i wasn't being rude just pointing out that if you bought a gecko just on impulse for a gift it is rarely a good idea.

Cheeto...I don't expect rudeness from anyone. But I think teenagers should be more respectful. I explained to him nicely the situation of why we bought it for a gift.

I dont see how he was rude....He is correct buying any animal for a gift is rarely a good idea (unless the person already knows your getting it).....He was only pointing that out....There are alot of teens on here w/ good advice and experience about herps.....Age is a relative thing in most cases.....Just because he is young does not mean he doesnt know his stuff ;).....Pretty gecko btw!

Did you read where I wrote and explained the situation to him? It was my brother, not just anyone the gift was for. And he had already had a gecko, his died, he was really upset, it was a replacement gift. My husband bought a tokay gecko instead of a lepoard gecko. We kept the tokay and went back and bought my brother another lepoard gecko. My point to that boy was to not jump to conculsions. I felt like he was insulting my intelligence by saying that it wasn't a good idea to buy it as a gift. Of course I would not buy a pet of any kind to just give as a gift at a birthday party. But this was for my brother, who really missed the gecko he had just lost.
