Keywords: split tail lizard Texas

On a rural porch near Elgin TX, about 30 miles east of Austin, this guy was sunning himself. About 15" long, I assume the split tail was the result of an injury? Any idea what he/she is?

The mystery appears to have been solved. Based on photos friends have googled up, it looks like a Texas Spiny Lizard, whose range includes Elgin, TX, where we saw it.

Size, habits and general physical configuration also seem to match.
