Seems to me it was about 3/4" long, and looked as if it should be in a curio shop... But, what is it?

This is a paper wasp, of the genus Polistes. This individual looks to me like Polistes apachus, the Southwest Texas Paper Wasp (common in much of the southwestern United States).
