This guy/gal was in the guest bath tub just kinda hanging out. Anybody out there ever been bitten by one? I have been told that only a small % of recluse bites actually have the rotting effect the spiders have become infamous for - and that many people get bitten without ever knowing because they simply didn't have a reaction to the bite for whatever reason. Can anyone confirm this?
my dad was bit on the forarm in may. the skin blistered and started to rot underneath the top layer of skin. gangrene set in... finially it cleared up.

I have learned that a large % of brown recluse bites go undetected because the person didn't have a reaction to the venom. Only about 1 in a 100 bites experience the severe skin rot that the bites have become infamous for. Most bites result some rash-like symptoms and itching, but that is about it. Interesting.

Barbgrl, I don't doubt that you have wolf spiders in your house. However, if you have many that look exactly like this, then be careful. Because the spider pictured here is a 100% pure bonafied brown recluse. Look at the very indentifiable 'violin' on his back. Anyone else wanna join in??

I've studied enough about these guys to knoe that this is definatly a brown recluse. Good news is they are a very docile spider and the only way to get bit is if you have pressure applied to the spider for they can't willingly bite through your skin. There isn't enough pressure. Just don't mistake these for the hobo spider, they are very poisonous and they need to be medically treated in a different way than the recluse. Be careful, where there is one, there is many.

If you live in Arizona, you wont have ant recluses, but you will find their cousin the hobo. It is rare that a person has no reaction to the recluse. If there isn't any swelling or a blister, it wasn't a recluse. EVERYONE is allergic to the recluse, they may just get a smaller dose of the poison. The recluse doesn't give the same dose spider to spider. It depends on mant factors, how hard it was rubbed, the temperature, when it last ate and so on. My best friend got bit and she only has a mark abot the size of a fifty cent piece, while I saw a show where a lady had her whole arm deformed from all the rotting. She had to have maggots put on to eat all the dead skin so it could scar. Gross.
