So how is the wheat bran for a subtrate?

I love it...
It really helps the smell, it clumps better than sand, it is cheaper than sand (~$7.50 for 50lb bag...since it is not as dense as sand that goes a long way...I am on my third change and only about 1/2 the bag). I have not heard anything bad about impaction. The only "bad" things: It does tend to be dusty, so you have to wash the glass about once a week or every other; and you cannot even get it the least bit wet (with water)or it will mold quickly. I give Fiona a bath instead of misting her. Other than that, I think it is the perfect substrate. (You have to make sure they are more than 10" though...Fiona was on paper towels before this tank.) I measured her yesterday...she is 16". I can't believe it...only 5 months old.
