How long have you been raising coatismundis? Do you breed them? If so, how long?

They arent old enough to breed just yet. I've had them for almost a year now. Got them at 10 weeks old. So they still have another year to go before they are of breeding age.
They are the HARDEST animal I have ever had to care for!!! I am right now struggling with my male and his love to destroy EVERYTHING. I need to finish getting them declawed. But that takes time and money. Something I dont have enough of for that right now. But even then, I am not sure how to fix this problem he has created.
Perhaps you have a suggestion Drewman? I know you have a kinkajou right? I dont know how much trouble he is. But maybe you can come up with an idea that I cant.
See my male has this thing about DRAINING his water bottle. He will drain it completely within about a minute. Sticks his nose in the hole and out all the water comes. All over his cage. Soaking ita and turning all his litter into smelly nasty MUD.
I cant put in a dish, because they destroy them and turn them over spilling the water everywhere. The bottle is on the outside of the cage, but they still have figured out how to stick thier hands through and knock the bottle out or drain it with thier nose. Whatever they feel like at the time.
So I am at a loss on how to give them water without it ending up everywhere.
I have tried taking the bottle from them when they start doing it, thinking maybe they would get the idea. My female did. But even a month later, my male just comes up with more ways to destroy it and get it everywhere. They need water. Every day. And they drink quite a bit. But I cant keep it in there long enough without them draining it. Any ideas? I'm out. :(

I do have a male adult kinkajou. He is not neutered and I got him as adult. We (my dad and I) have made a better pet out of him since we got him. It took some time but right now he is really good. He is awesome with his main caretaker but he isn't so great with strangers. I live in Philly with my mother and my kinkajou lives in SC with my dad. Thats why I say he is great, with his main caretaker, because I am not his main caretaker. When I am there he isn't that great with me but as time goes on, he gets better. He needs a lot of time to warm up to someone. He needs to know that he can trust you before he's your best friend and a few treats dont hurt! I think kinkajous are sweethearts if they are bottle raised.
I'm afraid I don't have any ideas about the male coati. I do suggest putting the cage outdoor if you can provide a cement bottom. What kind of cage do they have? You may have raised them the wrong way as far as dicipline goes. They are like a child and you can't let them get away with everything.

lah, yeh, we have no backyard right now. L:ive in a Duplex. But we are going to move within the next year, and will have a backyard then and outside they will go!
Till then I am stuck with them indoors.
they are just in a 3 level steel frame cage right now.
and YES, I agree I should have been a bit more strict with my male growing up. I spoiled him rotten and now he has the ego of an elephant! lol. My female is much more well behaved though. I never spoiled her as much because she wouldnt let me. She was unfriendly for a very long time until I got her back feet declawed. Now she gets more attention now that I can handle her and she enjoys my company. But she is MUCH better behaved than my male is. It seems every bit of disipline I try with my male is backfired his ego is so huge. He just throws a fit (I dont know if youve ever heard a Coati throw a fit, but its LOUD) and even scratches and bites if he doesnt get his way.
I fear I ruined him by loving him too much. Argh.

Well you made a mistake there and next time you get a coati you'll know not to spoil it as much and crack down with the dicipline. There is nothing worse than an exotic animal throwing a fit. All you can do now is try harder with the dicipline. I suggest you join the coatimundi yahoo group and talk to the different owners about your problem and I bet you that you'll get loads of tips about how to turn this behavior around. There is something that you did right with your female that she is sweet now and you need to try to do the same with your male from now on. Where did you get your coatimundis?

There'sa Coatimundi yahoo group! HAH! I been trying to find something where there is otehr people with them for suggestions! lol
No one ever gets on the General Exotics forum here anymore. So posting anything on them there doesnt do me any good.
Thanks for the heads up. I will try to find that group.
I got both my male and female from the same person. West Wing Exotics.
I am a bit upset now, I went to Animals Exotique and found out that the guy I got mine from lied to me when he sold them to me. I saw pics on thier website of Mountain, Red, and White Nosed Coatis. The guy I got mine from said mine were RED Coatimundi. But now I see they are Mountain Coatis by looking at the pics at animals exotique.
Well, I dont know that West Wing Exotics is even in buissness anymore. Theier website didnt work last itme I tried to pull it up and thier number didnt work either.
Now, looking at Animals Exotique, I wish I had gotten mine from them. Theirs are only 100 more than I paid for mine, bottle raised, declawed, first shots, micro chipped if you want it, everything is so much better with thiers. lol Oh well, sometimes you learn the hard way huh?

Here is the website for the coatimundi yahoo group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Coatimundi/. Just copy and paste it since I couldn't make it a link. If that directs you to a yahoo sign-in page, you will have to sign in if you have a yahoo account, or you'll have to make an account.
If I knew you before you got your coatis, I would've told you to go to Cliff (from Animals Exotique) to buy coatimundis. He has taught me a lot of what I know about coatis. He is one of the best coatimundi breeders out there because he has experience, and he loves them. If you ever buy anymore coatis, remember to buy them from Cliff. I met Cliff at a show in Florida and I got to play with his coatis. He is a really good guy, and his coatis are even better!

I forgot to add in my last post that you didn't learn the hard way, you just didn't know any better. Learning the hard way would be if someone told you, for example, to buy from CLiff, and you didn't. Not knowing any better is where, you just didn't know that Cliff is a better coati breeder that West Wing Exotics. I don't know anything about WWE, but I know that Cliff is great with his coatis and he is a really great guy.

I have a pair of sugargliders. They just had a baby. They are my pets as well as a breeding pair. They are a tame pair. I am actually lucky to have that.
I'm sure you will love the coati group. You'll have to tell me what your username is when you get into the group. I have a tip for you when you join. Let me know when you get on. I'm going to tell you how to set it up to where they won't send you every single post that every single person makes.

Odd I havent gotten a reply about the group yet. I aked to join some time yesterday. It is now the next day and getting late. Usually I get a reply for these groups alot sooner than this.
I talked to Cliff on the phone today. He gave me a few ideas and pointers. VERY SMART MAN! I am going to buy one of his baby white headed blonde gliders in the future too. Only 400-500 dollars. heheh But I think they are well worth it if I can get some babies liek taht to sell too.
HOw is your new baby doing? I remember you were having problems with your last litter not making it. Is this one doing better?
I have 3 babies this litter. Just found out from Cliff that they can actually have 3 babies. 4 is possible even, but he has never seen 4. That would be so cool huh?

My parents are divorced and I live with my mom in Philly. My dad has the sugargliders right now and he lives in SC. I dont know how the baby is doing right now, all I know is it is fine.
The coati group always takes long, so I wouldn't worry about that. The blonde headed glider seems very expensive. I would save a few more hundred dollars and buy a mountain coati if I were you, but thats just me.

Lol, I am not going to buy ANYMORE mountain Coatis or any other types. 2 is plenty! I wont be buying the blonde sugar glider for many years even. I just would like to have one some day. Gliders are easier to keep than the Coatis. 2 Mountain Coati's is already more than I can handle. lol
BTW, I got on the coati group today. So I will message them soon.
