Keywords: veiled chameleon, sleeping on the floor

This is Emma... She likes to sleep in strange & unusual places, like tonight, under the radiator (it is not on, nor is the liklihood of it comming on anytime during the night very great, as we are continually fighting with out landlord about the lack of heat in this place)... I thought Chams were arboreal... I think Emma skipped that chapter in the chameleon's guide to life.

Why is she able to get under the radiator in the first place? If you are using a free range setup, its important you make sure she is safe from all potential injury as a result. Sleeping under the radiator doesn't seem like a sign she is being well attended to...

i know that with my female veiled. she was sleeping on the ground of her inclosure also. i studied up on it. and from what they say. it sounds like they do it cuz they are trying to lay there eggs. fertile or not. and without the proper spot to lay them. the eggs just rot inside them. leaving them sick and eventually death. if i were u. keep a close eye on it. just in case thats happening.

She does have a place to lay her eggs, she was just trying to hide (as she picks a new spot every night).
And Mr. Anderson, if you wish to point out that someone is doing something wrong, perhaps a criticism might be better received along with an educational suggestion (explaining what can be improved, how to improve it, etc.) rather than simply telling the person thay are wrong & horrible keepers. I've read your other posts & I can see that you are knowledgable about herps, but you come off as rude & "holier-than-thou" when you don't provide backing for your comments... Just a thought.

My apologies, I though when I was providing a suggestion for improvement when I said "If you are using a free range setup, its important you make sure she is safe from all potential injury as a result." I'll try to be clearer in the future.

Chameleons generally do not sleep on the ground under a dusty radiator when they are being well cared for. I'm curious about your setup. If you are using a free ranging enclosure, I recommend you look at this article: http://www.chameleonnews.com/year2003/mar2003/free_range/free_range.html If you are not, I'm assuming you had her out for a little while when this happened. In this case, I'm concerned that more may be wrong with your chameleon as it wouldn't be normal for them to fall asleep like that under normal conditions. Furthermore, if she is looking to lay eggs and that is why she is on the ground, maybe your laying location is not to her liking, in which case, i recommend you read the following: http://www.chameleonnews.com/year2003/jan2003/nesting/nesting.html If all it was that she was looking for a place to hide, I wonder if you are not providing her with ample vegitation to feel secure in her setup. It would help if you could post a photo of your setup or post a detailed description of it cause it seems like something is awry.

Emma is now in a 65Gal reptarium (bought b/c it claimed to be easier on the claws of chams & help prevent lost claws... something I now know to be untrue, as I found one of her claws stuck to the side of the darned thing!). Anyway, She has a drip bottle, gets misted 2-3 times a day (I work a lot of the day, so I'm planning on making an automatic mister for her out of a table fountain pump & a timer... I hope it works out). Anyway, she also has a hibiscus plant & pothos & a huge 5 gallo egg-bucket, as well as some plastic vines to climb on. I am (hopefully) going to be able to drag my SO to the herp show tomorrow & get her some less-expensive branches (as the vines & the hibiscus do not seem to meet her perching needs). For light/heat I have a 150W basking bulb suspended a few inches above her cage, and 2 18" flourescent bulbs (one UVB & one full-spectrum). She seems to be much happier in her new environment, as her colors have gotten lighter. I never see her use her bucket tho, any suggestions on what to do with it, where to place it under the lights, etc?
Thanks!!
