Please can anyone tell me if this is a male or female and how you can tell the difference.

The easiest way to tell is by the pectines. The larger the pectines it is a male, the smaller the pectines it is a female. If this animal was caught wild judging from the size and the bludging of the body, i would guess "she" is a female and is gravid.
