Not sure about your first question, but the most reliable way of telling the snake's sex is sticking a probe into the cloaca, if it goes up 2 to 6 subcaudal (belly) scales, it's female, if it's male, it can be inserted up to 6 scales deep. Still, don't try this at home, kids, if you do it incorrectly, you can pierce the hemipenes or the cloaca, and your snake's screwed, so get your vet to do it. Also, the male's tail is usually longer, and in boas and pythons, the cloacal spurs are longer and more visible (they're now used to stimulate the females in mating).
