Your tank actually looks great not crappy at all. Considering you have a green thumb and your plants are growing great why not just remove the rocks which actually just displace water and take up so much room.
Your plants are doing so well let them just cover the rock areas. Do you use CO2 and what type bulbs do you use?
I ask because I want to copy your method and hopefully your tank (heeheee)

im very cheap with this tank, so i use 2 40 watt syvanna??? sun stick fluorescents, and i use one of the 18 watt florescent lights that came with the tank- but not very often.- as for c02- ive never used it before... which is kinda weird- i barley have more than an inch and a half of substrate, no fertilizer, low light, and my plants still manage to grow at least an inch a month! i dont know what i doing...hmmm
as for the rocks, ive always wanted to remove some of them, but the fish are soooo attached to them, for if id remove them, they’d probably panic... which is too bad- i wish i could.

OH! And here’s a tip- if you really want to be cheap, go down to a river and take some of the substrate… it may be illegal- but I think MAYBE that is why my plants are doing alright still.. (I have a mix of river sand and some kind of aquatic plant substrate I bought at a home improvement store- it works pretty well.)

The river gravel idea is a good idea and there is one not far from here and a clean river going to do that.
I am setting up a planted tank and going to try that. I assume your tank is a 55 gallon or a 40 long tank since you use two -40 watt bulbs?
My tank is a 55 gallon tank . Its being set up now but the river gravel idea i like and going Sat to get it.
Thanks.
