You THINK it's an Indian cobra? Very hard to tell, but looks like it's an albino kaouthia, not N. naja. Which is scary, because you are keeping a snake that can kill you and you don't even know what it is. Smart. Please don't kill yourself and ruin it for everyone...cobras DO NOT make the best first hots.

Would it be unkind to ask if you have antivenin for the snake? Not knowing for sure what it is kind of answers that, though. Do you at least know of a hospital that has antivenin in sto[bleep]? Just in case, mind you.

Its ok, ive confirmed an albino naja naja and have taken measures against any possible accidents.
sorry to have all of you worried, never meant to, my bad.
I still wanted a bitis gabonica ( heard from various herpetologists it the calmnest of all vipers) but then again, cant say no to my boss ( hes the one who gave it to me:-S )

Albino Naja naja eh???? And your boss just gave it to you????/LOL.... Is that an all glass aquarium its in???? And please tell me that is not sand.... Hey guys, I dont think you need to worry about this fool getting bitten..... The snake will most likely be dead before it gets a chance to sink its fangs into him.... Hey arent you the same guy that was asking a bunch of questions on how to maintain leopard geckos????

A side note on bitis gabonica..... They are NOT calm, they are ambush predators.... They sit and wait for something to cross its path and then they strike.... From what I have seen from my years of experiance working with them in captivity, they will strike at anything that moves infront of them including your hand..... Oh and they never miss their target..... Let me tell you something about herpetologist that say they are calm.... They do not know a thing about them or how they work..... I dare you to get a gaboon and think it wont bite you faster than a lamb can shake it tail..... Have you or these herpetologist ever seen a gaboon flip back over on its self and try to kill the handler???? I have, on more occations than I ever cared to see..... You should stick to trying not kill leos in captivity before you start keeping a snake that can easily kill you.....

Naja naja??? Naja naja what? An Indian is Naja naja naja, a monocled is Naja naja kaouthia and so on and so on. It looks like an albino Monocled Cobra (Naja n. kaouthia) to me. NOBODY would GIVE away an albino Indian Cobra. Frankly the snake pictured does not look like it is doing so well to begin with. IF (and I stress the word IF) it is still alive, you need to have it dewormed and start feeding it.

I'm not going to rag on you, but I agree with Gregg that a cobra is not a good choice for your first venomous snake. You better do your homework. Have an emergency protocol prepared (if you need help with this, please call me and I will help you set one up). And IF that is being housed in a fish tank, you need to reconsider that as well. Spend the money on a real cage suitable for venomous. If you are going to play with the big boys, get the right toys ([bleep], I'm becoming a poet).

Well, he is still alive, ive taken his excrements for analyze, and it seems he has no parasites, he is in a normal terrarium( ventilation, top opening lid with lock, etc), i wasnt sure what substrate suited them well i was thinking of something like wood-bark-forest floor, but since the cage already came with its sand, and people telling me its ok with sand...anyways if you want me to change it, i can without any problems. By the way, im feeding it with 3 mice a week, is that ok or should i change feeding habits too?
The boss (supervisor of Madrid Zoo´s Reptile House) gave him to me because he was getting a lot of animals and didnt have space for the cobra (dont think its monocled, he doesnt have the patterns when he has his hood up.
Like i said before i did take measures incase some accidents may happen, but if you still insist its way bad idea, then ill give it back happily to the zoo.
In that case, which is the best venomous (preferibly vipers) to have as first?

a calm viper eh? here's a wake up call, no vipers are really calm...some might be more lacksadaisical (sp) than others, but if you want to keep hots, do your research, and know what you're getting into before even considering it.

Well, whatever it is, it's still alive and beautiful. I'm sure having had it for a while, and getting it from an acquaintance, you can see what it needs and how it acts, etc. Your boss is still alive, right? So will you be. Alive. Anyways, neato snake.
