my friend found this in his back yard. what type of salamander is it? seattle, washington is where we live

it looks like a santa cruz long toed salamander.

Santa Cruz long-toeds are endangered and should not be collected or kept.

Not a Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz is not in Washington State, it is however a long-toed salamander. More a Western Long-toed Salamander (Ambystoma macrodactylum macrodactylum). One key to keeping herps is that if you don't know the species...not recommended to keep in captivity. Check out www.enature.com, zipguides for further classification and information about herps in your area.

Sorry skid and Alexm, but Dragoiguana is right. This is a western long-toed salamander, Ambystoma macrodactylum macrodactylum.
