Keywords: Chamelon Flapneck Dilepis X-Ray

My chameleon has been sick lately and wasn't eatting. All the sudden she started to look dehydrated. I noticed that her belly looked larger than usual. I took her to the vet and he thought that she might be egg bound. I didn't really understand that because there was no male in her cage. Anyway, after he took X-Rays he found nothing unusual except that it looked like she was filled with gas. Any suggestions of what this might be?

I didn’t know a female could lay eggs without a male. Would the eggs have baby chameleons in them or are they just empty eggs?

She’s a Flapneck (dilepis) chameleon. When the vet weighed her she was around 70 grams. She's about 2 and 1/2 years old. Is that old for a chameleon? Her cage is about 2 1/2ft X 3ft X 1ft. She has a huge pathos plant and plenty of apple tree branches; I even made her a little tree that comes out of the cage where she climbs up to sleep. Her basking temp is around 95 degrees and her surrounding temps around 80 degrees. She has a UV light that I change every 6 months to a year. The only thing I sometimes have a problem with is keeping the humidity up during the winter. But a spray her a couple of times daily for a drink. I’ll take a picture of the cage if you want to see it.

She suddenly decreased her food intake until she wouldn't eat anything. Then she would sometimes open her mouth and almost look like she was blowing out air. Her spit was a little thicker too, but now it doesn’t seem as thick. Then she become large and almost looks bloated. Then she suddenly started really going down hill where she looks dehydrated with the sunken eyes. You can see some of her bones too. I was able to force feed her a couple of crickets a couple of days ago and now I’m afraid to force feed her because I don't think she has the strength to swallow. I don't want to choke her cause I don't know exactly where they breathe through in their mouth. Right now I’m giving her Fluker’s Repi Aid, some anti-inflammatory liquid the vet gave me, and as much water she will take.

the temps should be around ca.77-90 during the day and ca.65-71 at night.
i dont know how old this cham can be, sorry!

some times chams will stop eating, but about the open mouth, its a bad sign.
have you seen her mouth, any slime? maby it sould be upper respitory infection!

is she still all fat? i would never force feet with crickets, but keep giving her water, maby add some vitamins.

it's really har to tell over the internet.

by the way, sorry for my bad english

"Then she would sometimes open her mouth and almost look like she was blowing out air. Her spit was a little thicker too, but now it doesn’t seem as thick."

When she blows out air, does it sound like a sneeze or a gasp for air? You also mentioned that her saliva was thicker. Does she close her eyes at all during the day? The above things I mentioned are symtoms of an Upper Respiratory Infection. Her decrease in appetite could be related to this.

She died the day after I took her to the vet. :(

"the temps should be around ca.77-90 during the day and ca.65-71 at night. i dont know how old this cham can be, sorry!"

What is ca.? Calvin? I heard that chameleons don't live very long. She was about full-grown when I got her. The pet shop estimated that her age was around 6 months. I think it's pretty difficult to determine the age by just looking at a chamleon. She could have been one or two years old for all that I know.

"by the way, sorry for my bad english"

It's not bad. I can understand you. :)
Do you own any chameleons?

Yeah it kinda sounded like she was gasping. I thought that it might be a respiratory infection, but the vet said that her respiratory track looked fine. I'm not sure how you determine this by looking at an X-Ray, but he looked in her mouth too. He wouldn't prescribe me any antibiotics unless he did some blood tests though. I just couldn't afford it.

She was a great chameleon and I love her very much! She was a pleasure and a great experience. I'll never forget her. Thanks for your comments and concern.

Here's a pic of her with her excited colors.
