This is my first try at building my ball python a cage, it is 4 foot long, 2 feet wide, and 3 feet tall. It's kinda bare, any ideas on what to add?

reptile bark would look nice and it holds humidity well, I use that substrate on on all of my snake enclosures.

but wont that rot the wood? its pine so do u think that it would rot fast with a lot of humity in it?

i bought a couple of two-by-fours, and a pice of four-by-eight plywood, some plexy glass to make the walls and help hold in humity. it was really simple. first i built the frame, then i just went around and added the flooring and the walls. for the door we made is a slide door, i just made a little track for it to go on so it would slide smooth. it took about a week, but i didnt work on it nonstop, and the whole thing cost less than 60 bucks!

Nice cage. I've made a couple of natural wood cages before (looks nicer than melamine or glass tanks) and painted the inside with clear non-toxic epoxy or polyurithane, cant remember exactly what it's called but it stops the wood from getting damp and rotting. Clear pond paint works too but stays kinda tacky for a few months.

Most good hardware stores will have it and maybe some pet/herp stores. Only problem is that you gotta leave it to dry for bout 2 weeks or something, and make sure its non-toxic when its dry.

Great looking roomy cage. I would add some higher branches or maybe some type of ladder for climbing.
Might as well make use of the above area. Aspen stays dry and wont rot the wood its also very absorbent.
its nice to see a snake with a nice roomy cage.

ok thanx. would a ball climb? im going to work on it some more, add some more branches like u said. i was thinking of adding a ledge on the back side of the cage so she can climb up there and reach the heat light better. oh and where could i find a metal cover for the light? thanx for the nice comment:)

Oh yes a ball will climb and a lot to if given the chance not to mention its great excercise.
They are as you know stout thick snakes not arboreal like rat snakes so need thicker branches.
A shelf would be a great idea. This place has bukb guards but other sites carry them also.

Your cage is so roomy that shelfs would allow your snake to use the top area to. My friend has 2 balls a m/f in a cage with shelves tho not as big as yours and they do great not to mention use the shelf alot but they still need a warm hide area as they dont seem to bask on the shelf but enjoy it at night.
Your ball is lucky having such a roomy enclosure.

Looking at your cage has made me "insane" enough that I might attempt it. I would like a couple of corn snakes with shelves in a cage like that.
I am not good at building anything and my husband is even worse lol.
It would wind up costing me over a $1000 and I would wind up in the hospital lol but thinking of it anyway.
