That substrate that you have him on has been know to kill animals through accidental ingestion. You may consider switchng him onto forest bed (they like it a little bit on the deep side for digging. I believe that they enjoy a bit more humidity as well. Walnut shell should only really be used for some arachnids (in my opinion anyway...i am quite wary of the stuff)
