Cal King's new cage

I've moved my California Kingsnake from the 20 gallon long aquarium that the pet store used for him to a 55 gallon long. Tonight is his first night in his new home. The blue bowl doesn't exactly fit the decor, but in his old aquarium, he spent almost all of his time under that bowl. I want him to have that bowl because it's familiar to him. So far, he's spent more time in the open exploring than I've seen him explore for the entire ten days that I've had him. A strange thing is that I never saw him test the lid on the old cage, but in his first hour in the new one, he's already tested the lid a couple of times. The bedding is a combination of cypress mulch and repti-bark. Someone at the pet store told me that kingsnakes like burrowing in the cypress mulch. So far, he likes burrowing when he's not testing the lid. If anyone has suggestions, I'm open to them.
