This is caterpillar of a large moth. Not sure of the spelling, but it sounds like Cecropia moth.

yep, it's a cecropia moth caterpillar. They are so neat to find. Caterpillars typically feed on wild cherry, elm, maple, willow, alder, birch, and ash trees.

Check out my brand new posting of my adult cecropia, CC, that eclosed just last week! She is the survivor of a virus that hit all her siblings last summer by their 4th instar. She made it thru the winter and I was able to wild pair her the second night. It was hard releasing her the next night as I had grown so attached (raised her from egg)but I kept eggs and let her deposit the rest on a nearby cherry ;)
