this looks like a coachwip, definately not a rat snake. If it is a coachwhip it will be very active and aggressive and will not use constriction if you feed it a mouse.

Coachwhips repeadly strike until prey is subdued. It sorta looks like a western coachwhip.

Hey There,
For sure you have a western coachwhip. Masticophis flagellum testaceus. Some people think they can be really mean but i have kept them before and one coming and they tame down and do good. Some will not tame down but some do. They will eat crickets, lizards, mice, birds, birds eggs, and they have been known to eat roadkill if they are crossing a road and find something dead they will try and eat it. They reach a length of 3 to 8 ft. And range in colors from tan, grey, orange, pink, red, and sometimes black in some places. Well I hope I have helped a little.
