Please help me identify this huge fly. Pic taken July 2002 at Akame waterfalls, Mie Prefecture Japan. This fly was about 2 inches long and tried to follow and land on me.

Umm I think thats just a large horsefly, I squished a horsefly that looked just like that with my hat this summer in Nova scotia, Canada, and it was about the size of my thumb.

True, this is a horsefly from the family Tabanidae.
Females do suck blood, and they bother humans and livestock, mostly when there's water in the neighbourhood>
