Can anyone tell me what this white stuff is? I know its not paint because it won't come off, and I know its not the bone of the shell because it is level with the rest of the scutes.
This male three-toed box turtle was found on a highway in Southern Illinois.
looks like an old turtle, it would be lose of scutes and that is the bone you see, the reason it's level is because of wear on the scutes over time.

I also thought it wasn't the bone because there are many more bone plates than there are scutes, and if all that was bone then the individual plates should be visible. Even with the exception of ankilyosis. (Don't know exact spelling, but that is how it's pronounced)
