Anybody know what these dry-ish spots are?

I'm not certain, but I think they could be burns. Do you have an undertank heater? If so, sometimes they get under the substrate and it can burn them. If you have one, make sure that it's got room for the hot air to escape underneath so it won't overheat.
That's just a guess though.
