Meet Jack, my sulcata. He's hiding in my hamburger. Not a good place to hide Jack!

Not a toy?
Actually, Jack quite enjoys spending time with his
humans instead of being kept stuck in his terarrium
all day as some ornamental object. Jack is very social and loves all the attention and love he gets. No harm came to him by posing for this photo. He sat there willingly and enjoyed the treats he was given as a reward afterward. Don't be so quick to judge. We are experienced in caring for reptiles. I have owned them for 15 years, including a 6 foot green iguana. The more attention and care you
invest into your animals, the greater companions
they become.

If you wanna have a social animal and great companion, buy a dog...
All things considered, this situation has nothing to do with keeping reptiles professionally...

Jack is too cute to not be a model. The
camera loves him and he loves eating the
sets. =)

Well I hope this fellow from Poland can put
his assumptions and false judgements aside
because Jack is a well loved and cared for tortoise.
And all of God's creatures were put on this Earth to
be our companions. Rest assured, Jack is part
of our family and well cared for.

I understand Elegans' reaction. This photo is really shocking for european breeders because in Europe where laws concerning reptiles are very severe all reptiles are considered as endangered wild captive animals and not as pets or social animals (and you need permits to keep them even common species). Diffusing this sort of pics could make me lose my permit or being banned from all european forums. We just have different cultures. I just tried to explain. I don't judge you. Jack is a star now ! LOL

I don't judge you either. I appreciate that you do your best and you well care for your tortoise and you have dedicated yourself to keeping your Jack, but your method of keeping sulcata is not considered as the best for Jack, trust me :)
Your Jack does not really need this. Unfortunately, tortoises do not become attached to people. In conclusion I do not mention that the Jack's diet is not correct for sulcata.
Actarus, thanks for the explanation :)
I agree that we have different culture.
Best regards!!!

Despite what this picture shows, Jack doesn't usually eat hamburgers and chips (crisps?). Despite my other picture, I don't usually try eating Jack in hamburger form. That was the 1 and only time he ate a strawberry. 90% of his diet is Bermuda grass.

The point of the picture is to make an already adorable sulcata even more adorable. Just how people dress up their babies and take them to the photo studio and then send the pictures to family and friends. :D

I had no idea that the rules were so strict in Europe.

P.S. Look close, you might be able to see the fish in the drink. :)

You treat these animals like they're freakin' TOYS! This is a living being, not something to manhandle and molest. Yeah, ' Jack really enjoy taking the pictures'...you ass. The [bleep] tort already looks like its got pyraminding going on, and you probably feed it cat food. Jesus, people or your ilk should not be allowed to have reptiles. Go get a dog and put it in a ballerina dress and teach it to say 'I Love you'...nimrod. God bless.

Someone needs to go find a basking lamp to sit under
to warm his cold blooded heart.

'you're very disgusting' huh?
I can agree with that knowing nothing about you
just as much as you can agree on how the person who took this photo is 'stupid'

As another member of the U.S. tortoise keeping community, I can attest that this is NOT a cultural thing. I am an American and wouldn't do this to my poor tortoises, nor would any of the other folks I know who keep tortoises. Instead, I take pride in raising them in as natural a setting as possible. Justifying this nonsense by claiming that all creatures have been placed here by God to be our companions is laughable!

This is simply a case of one rogue person putting his/her enjoyment over the well-being/stress of his tortoise. And no argument could prove that the tortoise isn't more stressed out as part of a tortoise-burger and sailing towards a "predator's" mouth than it would be sunning itself naturally in a well-constructed pen.

wow, these people are out of control. i dont think putting a slice of bread on the tortoise is going to ruin his life. its a cute picture, and everyone needs to just settle on down and take a breath. to go on insulting someone for spending time with their turtle is ridiculous, if your such naturalists then you wouldnt have pets, you'd photograph animals in the wild. the minute you put that tortoise in a pen, that sandwich picture pales in comparison to the wrong things youve done. im not saying anything bad about pet keeping though. i also have a sulcata and i think he likes the attention, not as much as my dog, but i didnt get a tortoise so i could not spend time with it. in short, settle down fellas, this is the internet, that is a cute picture, and you probably dont know everything, so stop pretending to.
