It's a mixture of very small, smooth, chopped walnut shells and a red sand....he gets fed out of his tank so having this substrate is ok...it also provides a more solid feel around the snakes body when he's under allowing him to feel more secure

Is that the Exo-Terra snake den? I'm getting a sand boa soon ans was thinking about getting one if those. If so what size is it? Thanks!
Oh and I think I'm gonna steal your idea for a substrate, it looks very nice and I'm sure the snake loves it. How deep does your sand get? And do you leave the water dish in all the time? Sorry for all the questions!

Hey, dont worry at all about all the questions, when i was researching before i got him i had a ton too, yes it is an exo terra snake den and its filled with the moss it comes with, he basically lives in the thing when he's getting ready to shed, and yes I do leave the water in at all times because my tank as u can see in the photo maintains about a 40-50%humidity on its own...i'm lucky...but mainly i leave it in there cause i like him to always have access to water so he never dehydrates...finally i keep the substrate about 2in deep in the center and 3.5in on the sides of the tank just for aesthetic qualities, 2.5in overall should be fine

one more thing...the exo terra snake den is a medium...its plenty big for an adult male..if you get a female sand boa you may want to consider a large simply because of the extra girth they attain

Awesome stuff!!! What size tank are you using? I have a 20 gallon long. Im doing some temperature checks before anything else and Im getting a base day time temp of around 90(not the cool end) and 70 at night(not the cool end). I dont think a basking spot is really necessary...
Oh and the humidity(with no water dish) is around 31% right now. I am planning on keeping the water in at all times also.

I also use a 20 gal long with a combo hood so i just have a uvb bulb*not neccesary since he's under the sand most of the time, one 60 watt day bulb and a 60 watt moon bulb...thats plenty of room for an adult, especially a male adult since they max out at around 15-19 inches
