My thought would be a golden orb weaver, possibly Argiope aurantia, although the zig zags are a little bit different and the body more slender. I know the golden orb weavers do have a bit of regional variation. They are great to have around because they get rid of a bunch of pest bugs. It is harmless, may bite if you pick it up and harass it, but not venomous.
