what the hell!!! That looks like a wasp that bred with a praying mantis!!!! What is it?

Awesome!! I found one of those 31 years
ago. It was hard to find out what it was than. A mantidfly if I remember right. I still have it in a plastic box preserved. Also in the Audubon field guide. Nice pic. Thanks

Cool! A wasp mimic! I've only ever seen one other mantid similar to that one!
It is much more common to see bee mimics, as there are lots of fly species that do that, but I've only heard of a few moths and mantids that mimic wasps.

Species: Mantispid, Common name False Mantid or Mantisfly. They are in the Neuroptera order, related to Snakeflys. Recently acquired 1 in my collection, very rare to find.
